For this tour, plan in a full day.

Start your journey into the city’s past at the Berlin Wall Memorial [1] with a vivid insight into the division of the city and the dramatic events at the Wall. From Nordbahnhof [2], take the city railway (S-Bahn) and tram to the interactive GDR Museum [3] for a fascinating hands-on look at life in socialist East Germany. When you’re ready, take the city railway from Hackescher Markt [4] to the famous East Side Gallery [5] – the longest surviving stretch of the Berlin Wall. Afterwards, remember to check out The Wall Museum East Side Gallery [6], where 13 themed rooms with multimedia displays showcase the history of the Berlin Wall.

Head for Heinrich-Heine-Straße [7], a former border crossing point, and stroll through the vibrant Kreuzberg district to the world-famous Checkpoint Charlie [8]. There, you can visit the Checkpoint Charlie Wall Museum [9] or the impressive asisi Panorama “The Wall” [10]. The Berlin Story Museum [11] is just a few streets further on – and its multimedia exhibition of 30 fascinating displays, not only looking at the division of Germany, but Berlin’s entire history! Finally, carry on down Stresemannstraße towards Potsdamer Platz. In Erna-Berger-Straße, you can visit an original East German watchtower [12] – well worth the climb up the stairs!

If you have more time, the Stasi-Museum [13] in Berlin-Lichtenberg is also highly recommended.
