Wall Museum – Museum Haus am Checkpoint Charlie

The Wall Museum - Museum Haus on Checkpoint Charlie was established and opened as a civil commitment initiative immediately after the wall was built in 1962 by Dr. Rainer Hildebrandt, next to the legendary Checkpoint Charlie, the focal point of the Cold War, where world division began and where it ended.

The permanent exhibition about the Berlin Wall shows the history of probably the most strictly guarded border in the world. In the exhibition rooms, original items from successful escapes in getaway cars to hot air balloons, from self-made mini-submarines to illusive real surfboards can be seen. In addition to the display panels and escape items, the works of artists are presented who put this cruel division into their art.

In addition, the museum tells the history of the global non-violent struggle for peace and the liberation movements of Central and Eastern Europe including the opposition in the former East Germany that eventually helped topple the Wall. The exhibition "NATO: Mission Freedom" adds further coverage of post-war history.
As a museum, the Wall Museum is unique because it not only pays tribute to the past, but also shows the present in a lively and ever-new developing nature.

Information for school groups: In the museum, there is also an educational centre with 14 classrooms which are equipped for lectures and lessons. Guided tours specially tailored to school classes, conversations with eyewitnesses, presentations, and discussions are offered in several languages.
