At its inception, the Distel was promoted by East Berlin authorities to counter West Berlin's constant ridicule of the east. Inevitably, the Distel faced censorship issues and was soon forced to get scripts reviewed. Today, however, playwrights can unleash unbridled and biting observations of the bureaucracy and political set-up. Ironically, the theatre is located on Friedrichstraße, close to the Chancellor's office and houses of parliament. Note that all performances are in German. Non-German speakers might want to take a local friend along or simply soak in the convivial atmosphere and relaxed ambience.
