Sophiensæle

The Sophiensæle are among the most important venues for independent performing arts in Berlin – a place where the diversity of Berlin’s free scene becomes tangible and the future of performance is shaped.

Since 1996, the Sophiensæle have occupied the historic, listed Handwerkervereinshaus in the picturesque Sophienstraße in Berlin-Mitte, transforming its unique spaces into laboratories for new forms, bold experiments, and surprising encounters. As a theater, the Sophiensæle promote creative development and accompany artistic processes from the first idea to the premiere. The program combines established positions and emerging talents, local perspectives and international viewpoints. The Sophiensæle stand for artistic openness and aesthetic curiosity: presenting works that cross genre boundaries and rethink performative possibilities – between dance, performance, theater, visual arts, text, and discourse.
