Potsdam’s Natural History Museum is located in the listed Ständehaus der Zauche, built in 1770 to plans by Georg Christian Unger and once used as a legislative building. This is a prime example of the cultural re-use of a listed building and invites visitors to take a close look at the wildlife of Brandenburg.

The special exhibition "Animal Life in the UNESCO World Heritage" shows sections from the habitats of insects, birds and mammals which are at home in the parks and gardens of Potsdam.

The exhibit “Human Traces - biological invasions” looks at the global phenomenon of invasive species, presenting the latest findings on the process and consequences of biological invasions as well as a look at the various new invaders.

The permanent exhibitions tell visitors about the wildlife of Brandenburg, in other words, directly on their doorstep, with “Animals in the Garden” and “Wildlife Brandenburg: Species diversity Past and Present”. Another highlight is the cold water aquarium “Fish of Brandenburg”, where circa forty local fish species are shown in 22 pools, including rare species such as mullet and sturgeon, as well as the catfish, Europe’s largest freshwater fish. With a little luck, you might even get to observe the nocturnal predators in action even in daytime.
