Hugenottenmuseum Berlin

The exhibition, housed in the French Cathedral on the Gendarmenmarkt, shows the flight of the Huguenots from France as well as their arrival and rise in Berlin and Brandenburg. The Potsdam Edict of the Great Elector of 1685 marks the beginning of one of the largest European migration movements of recent centuries: at times, one in five Berliners was of French origin.

The Hugenottenmuseum Berlin (Huguenot Museum) was opened in 1935 as an institution of the French Church in Berlin. Since then, the exhibition has been revised and rebuilt several times, most recently in 2021. On display are paintings, engravings, precious books, manuscripts and medals. Also documented is the building history of the adjacent Französische Friedrichstadtkirche, which Berlin Huguenots built in 1705 with their own money and craftsmen. It was not until 1780-1785 that Frederick the Great had the representative tower of the French Cathedral added as a counterpart to the German Cathedral, which today houses the exhibition rooms of the Huguenot Museum.
