Friedrichswerdersche Kirche

Designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel and built between 1824 and 1830, the Friedrichswerdersche Kirche has served as a museum church since 1987 and is also a branch of the Alte Nationalgalerie. The permanent exhibition “Ideal and Form. Sculptures of the 19th Century” offers a unique opportunity to experience 19th century sculptures within an architecture that has largely been preserved in its original form from that very period. The Nationalgalerie’s sculpture collection is considered the most comprehensive collection of 19th century sculptural art and holds an outstanding position within Germany’s museum landscape.

With more than fifty sculptures, some of them larger than life, the exhibition provides a complete overview of the Berlin School of Sculpture and its international connections. On display are important works by Johann Gottfried and Emil Wolff and Christian Daniel Rauch, including the famous so called “Princesses Group” by Johann Gottfried Schadow, a double statue of the Princesses Luise and Friederike of Prussia.
