DARK MATTER Berlin

DARK MATTER is not just a museum for modern art but a multidimensional parallel world of light, space, and sound created by the visionary light artist Christopher Bauder and his design studio WHITEvoid. Located within the pitch-black rooms of a converted factory, DARK MATTER presents a parallel cosmos of expansive light installations where the boundaries between the real and the digital worlds become blurred. Since the opening, more than 500.000 visitors already embarked on an immersive journey through seven partly interactive works, where light, movement, and sound fuse into emotional choreographies of luminous shapes and colors.

Experience the individuality of DARK MATTER

Spanning 1,000 square meters of exhibition space, DARK MATTER features a diverse range of multimedia installations. These installations vary from breathtakingly intimate light compositions to interactive walk-in structures and room-encompassing audiovisual performances. Some works are enhanced with a unique 3D sound system, adding another dimension to the experience. Each room possesses its own individual atmosphere that unfolds upon entry, creating a holistic and one-of-a-kind experience for visitors of all ages and backgrounds (we offer noise canceling headphones for children to rent at the entrance).

Additionally, seasonal Installations are lighting up the Berlin night in the DARK MATTER outdoor area located right next to the permanent exhibition space. Until 29. September 2024, guests are invited to experience SOMMERLIGHTS with Bauder’s latest installation FLOW, for which Dutch musician Chris Kuijten composed the multi-channel, immersive soundtrack.

Internationally successful

Christopher Bauder and his WHITEvoid team can look back on an impressive international portfolio: their creations have already been shown at venues such as the Centre Pompidou Paris, National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing and Design Museum Barcelona. In 2014, Bauder and his team were responsible for LICHTGRENZE, a monumental installation of 8,000 glowing balloons that marked the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. This was followed by successful installations such as DEEP WEB (music: Robert Henke) and VEKTOR at Kraftwerk Berlin. The work SKALAR (music: Kangding Ray) toured Amsterdam, Zurich and Mexico City after its premiere in Berlin and was recently shown for the first time in Detroit.

DARK MATTER builds on this legacy and offers an extraordinary and transformative experience that combines technology, art and emotion in a captivating presentation of light and sound.
