Hackescher Markt in Berlin

Hackescher Markt

Hackescher Markt is popular with locals and visitors alike. No wonder, as the traffic hub in the Spandauer Vorstadt combines attractive shopping facilities, a wide variety of restaurants, and creative handicrafts. It is also a popular starting point for visiting the many sights in the area. Hackesche Höfe, Monbijoupark, and Museum Island are only a stone's throw away. Thanks to its central location, it is also ideal for a start into Berlin's vibrant nightlife.

From marshland to a promenade

Marshy marshland once stretched along a moat where nowadays Berliners and travellers bustle around in the numerous cafés, restaurants, and shops. In the mid-18thcentury, It was demolished by order of Frederick the Great and the area was transformed into a town square. It quickly became popularly known as Hackescher Markt. On 23 July 1840, it was officially named after its builder, the city commander Count von Hacke. With its connection to public transport, the square gained in importance, to which the proximity to the Berlin Stock Exchange also contributed. At the time of German division, Hackescher Markt led a shadowy existence, as urban life in East Berlin was concentrated around Alexanderplatz, which was built in the 1960s. This changed after reunification: old buildings were renovated, new buildings closed the gaps created during the Second World War, and Hackescher Markt became a popular promenade.

Hackescher Markt today

Today, Hackescher Markt is a shopping paradise, gourmet temple, and creative workshop all in one. Around the square you will find trendy fashion shops and chic boutiques as well as many workshops and artist studios where you can buy traditional handicrafts and design items. In the countless restaurants, fans of local and international cuisine can get their money's worth. Whether coffee and cake in a cosy café with a view of the square or an after-work beer in a rustic pub, Hackescher Markt has something for everyone. A popular weekly market takes place here on Thursdays and Saturdays and leaves nothing to be desired: the wealth of culinary delights ranges from cheese, sausage, and fish specialities to homemade pasta, baked goods, and desserts. In addition, there are also many stands with high-quality accessories, souvenirs, and designer pieces.
