One of the five museums located on Berlin's Museum Island, the Alte Nationalgalerie is home to a vast collection of 19th-century art. It is located on Museum Island and was opened in 1876. Highlights of the collection include Karl Friedrich Schinkel's 'The Monk by the Sea' and Adolph von Menzel's 'The Iron Rolling Mill'. Visitors can also view major works by French impressionists Claude Monet, Édouard Manet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. While the building itself showcases stunning architectural details, the artworks are exhibited in bright and airy rooms.
