GRIPS Theater

With a winning combination of brains and wit, GRIPS Theater has been developing realistic children’s and youth theatrical pieces since the 1960s that address the here and now. GRIPS founder Volker Ludwig describes his theatre’s mission: “to show reality, develop perspectives and give courage.” And the idea’s success has proven him right: the imaginative presentations of real-life issues has been emulated in productions around the world more than 1,800 times and staged worldwide over 1800 times in about 50 countries and 40 languages. With four to five world première productions each year, GRIPS caters not just to children and teenagers, but also offers pieces addressed to adults. This includes the cult musical “Linie 1” about the riders on a West Berlin U-Bahn: from the widows of Wilmersdorf to the punks of Kreuzberg. Since 2012, the adult programme has also featured FRAU MÜLLER MUSS WEG, a comedy about a parents’ evening by Lutz Hübner in a magnificent staging by film director Sönke Wortmann. From November 2013, a staging of Mark Haddon’s hit book “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” has been offered on the grand stage at GRIPS Hansaplatz. In addition to pieces for children and youth, GRIPS also offers a repertoire for adults: In addition to the smash GRIPS musical LINIE 1, other plays absolutely worth seeing include “DIE LETZTE KOMMUNE” and “FRAU MÜLLER MUSS WEG”. Smaller and more intimate productions are performed at GRIPS Podewil, a second stage on Klosterstraße in Berlin-Mitte. As at the main stage in the Hansaviertel, the plays at GRIPS Podewil encourage to join in the fun with some cross-generational cheers and laughter as well as some good old foot stomping and whistling.
